Why Paint Prep Is the Job, and the Painting Is the Easy Part

A paint job that fails does not usually fail because of the paint. It fails because it was applied over something it could not properly stick to — chalky old exterior, glossy trim that was never scuffed, a patch that was never primed, or a surface that was still damp.

Inside, prep means filling and sanding the dings, taping and floating any drywall damage flat, caulking the gaps where trim meets wall, de-glossing anything previously painted in a gloss or semi-gloss, and spot-priming every repair. Skip the spot-priming and the patches flash through the finish coat as dull spots — a defect you can only fix by repainting the wall.

Outside, prep is a bigger share of the work again. Washing off chalk and mildew, scraping anything loose, sanding the edges of scraped areas so they are not visible ridges under the new coat, priming bare wood the same day it is exposed, and caulking joints that move. On a house that has not been painted in fifteen years, prep can genuinely be most of the labour.

The other half of longevity is not painting at the wrong moment. Too cold, too hot, too humid, or too close to sundown on an exterior, and the film does not cure the way it is designed to. It looks fine on the day and fails early.

This is also why paint quotes vary so much for what looks like the same job. If one number is far lower than the others, it is worth asking specifically what surface preparation is included — that is almost always where the difference is.
